My disco has a nasty habit of screeching when she is stationary, in-gear but clutch-down.

Taking her out of gear and then putting her back into gear typically stops the noise.

Its worse during the colder mornings - so with winter coming I'm wondering about getting it fixed.

The noise started a fair while back (after a gear box change if I remember) but I was told by the garage (a reputable 4x4 garage) that this was a common problem and was due to a brass bush rubbing against a steel casing.

With my new found desire to work under my car I thought I'd investigate this further.

Can anyone help?

Cheers

That description sounds like the spigot bush.

I suspect that it is either that spinning or the release bearing playing up.

Either will require the gearbox out again.......not something to attempt on your own if you are new to 'spannering' :)

Thanks.

If it is the spigot bush, is it safe to 'live with it'?
Or should I be getting it fixed pronto?

Looking at the amount of oil on the underside of my car
could this be related to a leak?

Cheers!

I had the chance to chat with a Landrover engineer on this and he identified the same problem.
He then went on to say that he'd heard them get a _lot_ worse - initially he said it sounded like the power steering pump - so maybe I was overdoing it with 'screech'.
Its done it for the last couple of years and this guy seemed pretty unworried about it so I'm going to risk leaving it!

Could be famous last words!

Thanks everyone
