gearbox back in and now its noisy

Ive had the gearbox and transfer box stripped down

got it back in this afternoon and started it up with no props connected

3rd/4th noisy when all in gear but quiet when transfer gear or O/D in neutral
the sound is a rumbling/knocking sort of noise

im thinking the main box is ok so either front wheel drive housing or transer box

any ideas on what it could be or further tests before it comes out again

can the gearbox/transfer box drive gear be removed without taking out the transfer box ?
think through the end cover
if so take it out and spin it up that way it would be just the main box

yes because you change it to fit overdrive

I can take ut the itermediate gear through the bottom cover plate(after draining the oil), this disconnects the transfer gear and front output shaft

not sure if theres enough room to take off the front output housiung while gearbox in place,

Would think the front wheel drive and transfer case would be noisy in all gears? If you rev it up higher in the lower gears, you sure the noise still isnt there?

IF you can try it with the transfer lever in neutral you might be able to hear if the box is noisy ,if you still got the rattle it tf neutral its the box,if quiet moer likley tf box or 4wd its worth a try ,also take one prop shaft off,try it ,replace,take tother of n try that,it could tell you wether its front or rear where the probs are........all simple and CHEAP before you jump to any expensive conclusions.............dave
