I need help,
When I got my 90 it had some kind of clear gear oil in the box and it was difficult to get 2nd when cold,
I changed it for mtf94 and now the weathers dropped cold I effectively don't have a 2nd gear until the engines up to temp.
What can I do? Is there any other oils to try?
Iv found 5 ltrs of ATF dextron3 in my garage, maybe I should try that?
Or is it a case of they all do that?
Second thing is the rear diff seal is weeping
Iv found one in my spares tin, frc8220 will this fit an 03 defender ?
I think!!!! It's got a 4 bolt flange!
Sorry if these are irritating techy type questions but I'm at my wits end and thinking of buying.......an l200,:violent:

gear oil may well have damaged baulk ring ,you could try the atf ,poor gear change is usually a worn baulk ring that may be helped by mtf94 but not fixed,frc8220 will fit but mudshield will catch it either change mudshield or fit ftc5258

Try double de clutching and see if you can get the gear.

I have a similar issue on my Series 3 - can be a bit obstructive changing down into 2nd from 3rd when cold but fine when warm.

Iv tried every gear change imaginable!
When it's cold it's impossible to get second but once warm it's fine,
Would a mechanic problem like a warn baulk ring be worse in the cold?
And would that only affect one gear?
I hope it's not cos that sounds dear.....
Thanks for the replies chaps

yes ,baulk ring has to clear the oil from baulk ring then match gear and synchro hub speed by braking against gear ,about £6 each but you need to strip box to replace ,there are other faults that can cause poor gear change ,but that seems most likely from what youve said
