I’ve tried to see if this has already been answered, but can’t see anything that sounds the same as this issue.

When in the neutral position, the gear-lever seems to flop around from left to right like Lindford Christie walking down a beach in the buff!

It makes finding 3rd and 4th a bit of a challenge in a quick fashion. I assume it’s something to do with the springs in the mechanism, but can’t find any references to replacement/repairs.

ETA: 07 defender 90 XS
Any ideas?

You don't say what Landy you have and you haven't put it on your profile either.
There's a spring, on the lower 'ball joint' section of the gear lever, so I suspect there might be a problem with that spring.
This is it https://www.lrdirect.com/FRC7414-Spring-Lt77-Gearbox-Selector/
I think its the same spring (ie part number) in the R380 box.

07. I’ll have a look and fingers crossed can get it sorted. It’s strange! Sometimes it’s perfectly fine, but others it’s loose as hell.
Ahh, the first of the Puma, Ford engines. They strapped that to a new 6 speed box, so above mentioned spring will not apply. Always good to mention model and model year. Probs something similar though ;)
