Hi

I have recently bought a 110 defender and as much as I love it it has given me a few headaches, but hopefuly nothing I can't fix!!! I was crawling around underneath it yesterday and noticed what (I think) to be a hole where the sump plug in the gear box should be? I have put a spare one in, but I am not sure where to access the oil top up cap/hole (sorry) in the gear box and how much oil to put in it. I don't have a workshop manual yet.

Thanks in advance

welcome edd!

I think you've just found the bell housing drain hole ??
It only need the plug fitting if you're doin any wading otherwise any oil leaks from the box/ crankshaft can build up and contaminate the clutch.

Thanks Mondo

That was a fast response. I'll go and remove the plug I've just put in!

I believe you will have the R380 box which holds 2.67litres, (same for the LT77 anyway however this box has 2 drain plugs, one which houses the filter) so for topping up purposes, its really just how much it leaks, when I do mine I jack one side up, and overfill it, will do no harm and gives you longer between top ups.

It takes AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION FLUID (ATF) manual or not thats what it takes, anything thicker will NOT be good for it, as its pumped oil circulation in these boxes and as a result need thin oil to be sprayed up over the gears etc...

All the details can be seen in this guide:

DIFFLOCK - 5 speed box Oil change

If your just going to top the box up, its easier to put some ATF into an oil can with a flexi pipe and squirt it in with that...
