Gear box fault

i have a 4.6v8 range rover and every so often it come up with a fault on the dash saying- gear box overheat.what could it be? and is there a temp sensor? could it be that it is faulty?

It's always possible. Check the connections first. You do don't say how old yours is but on my 2001 my I think I found the sensor whilst having a route round at the front. The sensor seems to be attached to the oil cooler right hand side of the engine bay as you look in. Random gearbox faults can also be caused by low battery voltage.
 
Had a look at the sensor and it has been half fixed by the person before so re did the conection and it seems to be working ok now. Thanks for the help.
