Hi, am thinking of buying a series 3 at some point. How easy is it to convert petrol to diesel? What lump would you use? Would a new transmission be required? Total newbie to this, like you can't tell already. BB
 
Welcome to Loonyzoo. Some here would say stick with the petrol as long as it serviced it will last you a long time. Diesel can be put in but you will have the headache of cost to adapt. The equivalent engine would be a plodder 2.25 or 2.5 2.5td 200tdi. Conversions can be costly nightmare if not done correctly and the free fluffy dices on the rear view mirror might be the only thing worth crying on.
 
Thanks for speedy reply saxa. Seen a very nice petrol s3 total rebuild. When I looked into mpg my jaw dropped, they reckoned 12-15 mpg, does this sound right to you? What would the diesel equivalent be in your opinion?

Only V8s 3.5 onwards would achieve that score. What size petrol engine does it advertise.

Seriously need to look at it if it only gets 12-15mpg, that is V8 territory.

What do you actual want from it?

Genuinely curious here as I see no point to buying a series and then spending a phuck ton of time and cash on it in order to try an build a Defender or heaven forbid turn it into a Range Rover Sport.

Gentle green lane plodder with a bit of utility behind it says petrol and drive like a nun if the fool consumption worries you.

As an aside, do some maths on the cost of fuel and the cost of an engine conversion and then see how many years it would take to break even on your anticipated mileage.

You'll hear all sorts of wonderful things said about how easy it is to fit a 200/300Tdi and you'll get a gazillion mpg, all of which is tosh as the pay back is huge and you need to think of it as a forever car to justify the cost and hassle associated with the conversion.
 
lovely motors the 2 1/4 so smooth :)

Put an SU carb on it, with the proper valve clearances and good fuel you should see 23-27mpg.

Thats what a friend of mine's 1979 109 puts out. ;)

Gotta get myself a series ;)

My input (as a petrol head :rolleyes:) is that a properly set up 2.25 and 2.5 petrol is a lovely under stressed engine. Smooth, quiet (for a Landy) some say like a sewing machine. Much nicer, smoother and quieter than the 2.25/2.5/2.5TD diesels. Putting a 200/300Tdi into a S3 is possible but not straightforward. Mixed driving, driven gently the 2.25/2.5 should give mid 20s mpg.

Do you mean an incomplete engine? Getting harder to find now, Turners in Surrey do very good rebuilds but you'll need to give them your engine or pay a surcharge.
Looking at the old girl View attachment 175126 if the rebuild has been done properly (is the chassis galvanised or plain steel?) it's worth 5K but might be worth negotiating a drop due to the engine?

Pity, I had a 2.5 petrol engine for sale last autumn, @minecab now has it in his S3.

Much obliged for your input capo. Not sure if galvanised. The lump had new head etc. I should have left a deposit over the phone, it sold within three hours in Downham Market, hour n half from me, bugger. This is the problem when you don't know your market. Be a while before something that good a deal comes round again. I'll keep looking.
 
If you want a diesel, buy a diesel. They are noisy, smelly and they have a calendar instead of a speedo. It might get you between 5 and 10 mpg improvement over a petrol but will cost you more in fuel cost at the pump and parts when the engine plays up. My S3 is a lwb station wagon with a 2.25 petrol engine. It get about 18mpg but it's my fun car and I only do about 600 miles a year. If you are planning to use it everyday and mpg figures concern you, get a mondeo.
