Its a 90 pickup 300tdi (94' plate, 185k) needs new timing belt. Only had it a couple of weeks and looking thru all the paperwork cant see when it was last done.

Ah, OK, a nice easy one then. I ended up assisting a friend to do mine and it wasn't too difficult a job, though I wouldn't have confidence to assist with yours.

I ended up pulling the radiator out when we did mine which was fine as I needed to change it anyway and I flushed and changed the coolant at the same time.

I think I was recommended a place in Bury to do mine (but ended up asking my friend as I want to learn). If Bury is close enough I can find out which garage and you can ring for a quote.

If you end up buying a kit to do it, just be aware that not everything is in the kit.

I used to use Paddocks but now use Buckley Brothers in Darwen for parts. Two older guys with lots of knowledge and reasonable prices. You can collect or they do mail order.

Thanks for that, yes send me the number and ill call them, want a few other bits and pieces doing also.
Id do it myself but im not set up atm with tools or space or time!

OK I will get the number for you, but that was someone for the timing belt as they specialise in diesel engines so not a general mechanic.

However, I will make another recommendation - join Lancashire Land Rover Club on Facebook. Lots of helpful people from around our area that know local places to use.

Oh, and if you are buying stuff for the 300tdi, be aware of subtle differences between the Disco and Defender units. I have a spare Disco top rad hose for this very reason. I also bought a rad frame that was for a Disco/Defender that in actual fact was suited to the Disco - thankfully it splits into four and the piece rotted out on my frame was the same as the Disco.
