Hi have had a look around the forum im trying to find someone who has had there old chassis galved for some time and if its still ok,looking to get mine dipped, have read all about the inside rusting,i do shot blasting so would give it a good going over.

Just watch if someone has wax oiled inside the rails - the galv may not take. Also try to clean out the crap from rails such as mud, rust etc as it'll turn to galvanised crud...

I have one gong for galvanising next week. It's a good 300 Tdi chassis I've stripped down and about to build back up. I've done two before and had no issues...

Thought that they dipped the chassis in an acid bath, and that & the heat of the galv tank will melt/burn off all the waxoil Surely???

Not that I've eer had owt Galvied. Though I'm hoping to get me noo (Old) Bulkhead done..

That's what I said, but apparently not oddly... Any dirt or oils left on metal can cause the galv to not adhere to the surface. You have to subsequently cold galvanise. I've had two bulkheads done also with good results.

done mine 16 years ago never waxoiled or painted
just got it back and built it right away
that was an 89 range rover
never had to do anything to it in all that time

i have just built a 90 defender same again galvinised
regards
mike

This is sounding good news thanks.i did think of cutting the top of and blasting inside rails.but all seams good. i did a lightweight chassis a few years ago for a friend not to galv just to paint and i cut the end caps off and stood the chassis up on end and empted out about 1/2 bucket of rust from the rails might do the same before

cut holes in the rear x member then shot blast inside the chassis as this area is double skinned and suffers bad

Are pressbrake was going to contact you for a hd rear x member thinking of fitting one before the galv as the one on is a bit scaby

Yes they do, but it doesn't work as you would expect; sadly.

They dip the piece in a solution of acid; hydrochloric or sulphuric, for between 30 and 90 minutes to remove rust. If for example it is greasy, or has paint on it, it won't clean it as you would expect. Paint will to an extent come off but a good paint job won't come off easily, some paints like real red oxide need to be removed with abrasives for example, paint strippers don't even hit that stuff.

Then they rinse the piece before lowering it into the zinc bath (my local yard has the zinc kettles heated to 450°C), the zinc will adhere to clean bare metal only, if there is paint it will burn off but zinc may not stick to the metal left behind because it won't have been cleaned.

My local yard doesn't get too upset if I leave a little paint on a small piece, they will just clean it, dip it, clean it again then redip to get a good coating. I have had some stuff where I didn't get all the paint off in places and it came back with zinc missing, I just zinc sprayed it and it will be fine since the zinc nearby will sacrifice itself if the metal was to be attacked.

The other issue is that even a stock LR chassis has some paint in it where the paint blasted through holes. You will need a yard who will do a double dip for you to make sure that stuff is burnt off and then coated. BUT they don't like this as it ashes up the zinc.
