Galvanising Qu

hi all

I'm currently looking at buying a Galvanised Chassis, but the chassis nu,ber has been removed in the process of it being done. How do you go about getting the chassis number back on it? VOSA?

And would it pass MOT without it?

I am fairly sure that new galvanised chassis dont have serial numbers. A second hand chassis should have a serial number if it has been part of a new vehicle. Cant say I have heard of old chassis being galvanised.
You can make substantial alterations to your vehicle and retain its identity.....Registering a radically altered vehicle : Directgov - Motoring it works on a points system.

Thanks for the info. I was just wondering if people tend to remark the Galvanised items. We have the old numbers from the original Chassis (well would if we buy it) lol

You can email DVLA with that question for the right answer but if you cannot see the old Chassis number I doubt that will do. I would have thought you would have to get a new chassis number. I would be very wary about parting with cash before you are 100% sure its not a ringer and that DVLA will be okay with it. You could be left with a ton of scrap worth £50. According to the guidelines on the site it has to be stamped on the chassis before they will issue or put in on the V5

That was my concern. As it was done after the MOT to.
Think I will go with my gut and leave it - Have a few other options at the moment.

My 110 has a new galvanised chassis which doesn't have a number on it. My understaning is that all vehicles made after a certain date must display a VIN number somewhere but I don't believe it has to be on the chassis. I have retained the VIN plate which is under the bonnet by the brake servo and this is all the MOT tester has ever been interested in.

Do you know how this will affect you if you should want to sell the vehicle?

I don't believe there would be anything illegal should I wish to sell the vehicle without a VIN number on the chassis provided that the VIN plate remains in place. However, I could understand a potential buyer being wary. Fortunately I have paperwork, bills & receipts of my own and from previous owners dating back 20 years, so I sould be able to persuade a potential buyer that everything is above board.

Just to clarify, are you looking to buy a vehicle with a galv chassis or just a chassis by itself? Is this a new chassis or old one that has been welded up and galvanised?

Its one Im looking at buying a van defender 90, think its been wealded and Galved and the numbers have all been removed in the process. You know when you just get a bad feeling that all the bits don't add up, well that is the problem. I think we may have found a more local option though from an owner who we know has taken care of his van.

Were also looking at the future of getting our Van galved and want to know all the info before we go and do it - better safe than sorry so they say

Yeah if you have a bad feeling about it then its probably best to play it safe. Looking at the DVLA website they appear to consider a new replacement chassis as if it were the original, but if you replace it with a chassis taken from another vehicle it is considered as costing 5 points on their "radically altered vehicle" page. So what if you use the original chassis get it Galved and put back on the motor? Technically that isn't a replacement but you could loose all the ID numbers on it in the process.

i can't see how that would be any different to patching a hole in the chassis which happened to be where the chassis number used to be..?

Well if thats the case it makes our plans a whole lot easier lol
