They have been fitted to all the 3 Series I have owned, all fitted by previous owners.
The first was a daily driver for me, so that made sense. But for the miles I do now probably pointless ?

I always thought they were pointless.
They may save a little bit on fuel, but probably very little on diesels.
You have to engage them from time to time anyway, in order to lubricate the swivel bearings, and if you don't, the bearings will fail quicker.
And they defeat the whole purpose of a Land Rover, the 4wd. If you are losing traction, you want to be able to select 4wd.
The last thing you want to do is have to stop, and play around with freewheel hubs in the middle of a pool of mud.

 Ha, Yea, that happened once. I went out to recover my Brother who had broken down on a dual carriageway in the early hours.
He was on the opposite side of a very wide grassy reservation with a slight incline. It was quite away to the next junction so.
I pulled onto the hard shoulder and waited for a couple of cars to pass.
Engaged 4wd and set off across the grass, about 3/4 of the way up I was sliding backwards. Quick check on traffic and roll back onto hard shoulder.
Get out, engage hubs and brain. Made it in one at the second attempt ! :D
At least my Brother thought it was funny. ;)
