The fuse for the brake lights and reversing lights keeps blowing on the defender. I have done a search but obviously the problem could be anywhere, but before I strip out the back loom and trace it all. Anybody got any thoughts. It's a 95 defender and the blowing fuse also has an engine with a lightning strike through symbol on the fuse box lid. What else does this fuse cover? The Haynes covers too many models and doesn't really list the fuses.

I have tidied up the rear light wiring loom as it was a bit of a mess, and taped the loom up in the rear tub.

The fuse won't blow in the garage, but if I drive anywhere it blows.

check the loom key places where it enters/exits the chassis, and where it goes round the bellhousing, when i did my clutch, the outer black tape had rubbed through, so it was only a matter of time before the insulation went the same way.

the fact that it wont do it in the garage says to me a cable thats chaffed

Yes I thought that it may be movement causing a short. Ill get under for a check.

The symbol is on the fusebox lid, power to engine? There is no EGR or other electronics? Nah really don't have a clue, will look for a handbook on tinternet with fuses listed.

I used to have a problem that my indicator and gauges fuse would blow. It turns out to be rain filling up one of the left hand indicators. So it wasnt consistent, it would only happen after it had rained for a while and I turned left.

Could your stop and tail light have the same problem?

Also, I recently found that the aftermarket stop and tail lights I had put on my landy had melted the plastic housing inside. Might be worth checking that the bulb holders themselves look good inside.

Yeah thanks for that, the rear lights are the original ones and don't think I have checked them carefully, will take a look.

reet, having done a bit of looking today whilst under there, that symbol/fuse seems to beed the control unit for the EGR valve on the 300tdi, its a little black box just to the passenger side of centre on the bulkhead, if you have an EGR/if it does anything.

doesnt seem to do anything else, apart from whats labelled

Cheers for that, I don't have an EGR and can't find any wiring that may have been for it.

But!!! I think I have sorted the problem.

The rear loom was rubbing on the exhaust and had bared two of the green wires, so I stripped the loom tape, taped up the wires, re wrapped the loom and tied them up properly out of the way.

Just been round the block and the fuse has not blown.

Fantastic.

Really need to take it off the road for a couple of weeks to change the front diff front disks and oil cooler pipes. So it is likely more questions will be popping up soon.

Thanks for the help.
