Hi all, I need some advise if possible, I have a freelander td4 2005 model, she has been a dream since the day I had her, a coupl of weeks ago I started getting a noise when cold, it sounded like the turbo was getting to much air, I checked induction pipes but all good, the noise came at about 40mph but didn't go when I dipped the clutch and let it idle. This has now developed in to a bearing typ noise again mainly when cold, I think it the prop as the ride feels weird at 60
Can you just take the prop off and run them? (process of elimination) I have also got the feeling of the hand brake on when reversing.

Im 99% sure it's the prop but before I start just thought I'd run it by the guys and girls who know.

Yes you can. Remove the prop complete from front to back. Hopefully the noise will be the VCU bearings and should stop. If so replace with good quality bearings. I made the mistake of going the cheaper route and 4 months later had to replace them again. The handbrake feeling like it is on is normal on a freelander, just not on fully. It is a charcteristic of the 4wd system on the freelander.Have you tested the VCU yet?

Have a read. Might save you some time.

Hi thanks for the reply, I can fid my way around the engine but when it comes to 4x4 running gear I'm lost- all I have done so far is check wheel bearing and made sure nothing had come loose - I was not sure if you needed blanking plugs for the box and diff, but if you can take the prop off without doing anything else I will try this first ......after the snow:) fingers crossed that's all it will be. Thanks for posting back

I think it's always best to change the two prop bearings at the same time, as they are so close together there's no telling which one has gone. As for the noise have you had new tyres put on latley. I had two new tyres put on the front of my freelander and started hearing what sounded like a bearing gone, I changed the tyres around and noise has gone, just wish I had changed them around before I spent £300 on having the two prop bearings changed.

After a lot of searching and testing you won't believe me ...... Prop bearings, I ruled them out as I replaced them as a matter of course when I did the clutch ! All good now, just got to sort the map sender :-(
