hi ive got a 1999 2ltr di and ive spent loads on it but since ive changed the vcu support bearings i get a - i can only explain noise as a woo-woo noise from drivetrain, sorry for discription, it only starts at between 40 and 50 mph and when ive got load on, when i take off load it stops, ive taken off new vcu support bearings off and checked them and all seem fine, they spin freely around vcu,ive did the tipex trick on vcu and after a few miles they are not in line so im assuming vcu ok, i disconnected front prop and no noise, the vcu damper was loose so realigned it and glued it, i did change rear diff oil whilst car raised at rear only so i could of put to much in, the rear diff support bushes seem ok and diff only moves a bit when i push rear prop up and down, im stuck as to whats gone wrong as before changing vcu support bearings noise wasnt there, please help, rob:doh:

What led you to change the VCU bearings, was there another noise that was possibly masking the noise you have now?

Are you saying the noise stops when you remove the propshaft assembly?

I remember seeing in the past that it is important to ensure that the support bearings outer casing are truely squared up, otherwise strange noises are emitted....

Is there any play in the front prop CV joint as the engine / transmission will pull away from the VCU under load causing the shaft to reach further. Check for backlash with the shaft extended. If this is the problem it is probably best to put up with the noise as a new shaft (for that is what you will need to do) ain't cheap.

hi thanx for reply, had no noise before, changed them as a precaution as rubbers were showing signs of wear, noise stops when i disconect front prop section, noise is like thers a unbalanced part somewere, should i have replaced prop back into origanal holes after i had changed vcu support bearings, thanks rob

It does sound like something is out of balance. Its important that that the bearings are square on the shaft. Tricky to test as you need to lift one back and one front wheel so that you can spin the prop while it is fitted. Make sure there is no wobble of the bearings in their support mounting.

hi i will try and see if new bearings are squared up, i cant see it being front prop uj as i had no noise before but i will check for backlash as you said, thanks again for advice, rob

Land rover recommend that you reference mark the front and rear flanges to 'aid reassembly' although I can't see why. Also care should be taken not to strain the front tripoid joint at an angle or damage to the bearings can result.

As for VCU bearing alignment loosen the bolts and make sure the support brackets are accurately positioned at 90deg to the centre line of the shaft.

Seconded: Best done with the vehicle on the ground/ garage ramp. Look along the propshafts from rear to front and aim to get them in as straight a line as possible between diff and ird couplings. Good luck.

try refitting propshaft flange 180 degrees from where it is now, it could otherwise mean that glueing the damper back has messed up the balance of vcu

actually i thought that the damper was only fitted to the 1.8, certainly the td4 doesn't have it.

it might be worth trying with it removed altogether if nothing else resolves it.

hi update, realighned vcu support bearings and although noise is still there its hardly noticeable so i can live with that, but is it me but soon as ive cured one problem another raises its ugly head, went out for a drive and after a couple of miles a noise i can only describe as a wheel bearing starts huming away, i jacked up car and as its a obvious front noise, checked for play in both front wheels but no movement at all, so to eliminate rear problems i disconnected front prop again and went for a drive and no noise, its not a loud crunching, grinding noise as ive read on other threads about ird giving up the ghost, do you think its on its way out, i did notice were the front prop joins ird there is a bit of movement, maybe a couple of mm up and down and outwards, i can see myself opening the wallet again, love the car though, any thoughts anyone, cheers rob:)

Check that front CV joint on the propshaft. Is there any backlash in that. Is it sliding okay? My FL plays all sorts of tunes depending on how warm it is and whats happening at the time. Got used to it. Doesn't mean its going wrong though. :)
