funny aircon symptoms

during the day when its quite hot and the aircon is most needed, the compressor seems to switch on and off. so while its tolerable the cabin is never properly cool. in the evenings when its generally cooler anyway the aircon runs just fine. this is a new phenomenon, the car used to get ice cold in about 10 minutes no matter how hot it was outside. what could it be? incorrect gas pressure? faulty 3-way pressure switch? that little sunlight sensor on the dash? any ideas welcome!!
 
I had similar arcon performance last summer. I.convinced myself it was the little sunlight detector that was faulty. Never got round to fixing it as the.summer only.lasted a week and was over by the weekend..

At least you get a summer in Notts. Up here we just get slightly warmer rain.:D:D:D
