If I were to replace the standard IC with a full width front mounted one (since there's loads of space between the rad and grille), would it affect the radiators cooling ability?

Possibly .. but I'd say it'd help coling as air will come through over a wider width than usual, no ends/brackets etc to get in the way.

No probs for me so far, full length intercooler right in front of radiator, had no probs at all on long distances and lengthy tickovers, all fine
