Took My Discovery down to local garage, as I had oil leek on my nearside wheel, Went down to garage to collect my disco and Garage said 3 seals and 2 gaskets, problem sorted. But NO..Now on full steering lock right hand down there is a very bad Grinding noise coming from that side of the wheel thats just been fixed. Ive had this disco for 2 years and its never done this before I took it into Garage yesterday..

Garage saying its nothing they have done...

Any suggestions please what it might be

The first thought is that the wheel bearing was on its way out and they tightened it up when they put everything back together, but it needs replacing. What model disco is it?

1996 300tdi,
Theres no noise at all till I put full right hand steering lock on then its grinding.
Are you saying when they have tightened back up after replacing seals its broken ???

Thanks

I've posted a thread with an identical problem. Suggestions so far are that the CV joints are knackered, the wheel bearings are done or a problem with the steering stops..

I think the garage would of noticed if Cv's where knacked or problem with steering stops. I think when garage has replaced seals they have tightened the bearings back up and have broke the bearings. so to speek.

looks like all to be done again with new bearings this time as well, on top of the £100 they have just charged me for fitting 2 gaskets and 3 seals.

It might not be that, it was just my first thought. Jack the wheel up off the floor and spin it, listen for noise (other than the brake pads against disc) and wobble it holding the wheel at each side, then top to bottom making sure there is no play. Depending on which seals they changed they may not have even had cv joint out to notice any damage, and if it only makes noise on full lock it might be cv joint. Bearings and cv's are not too hard to do if you have a basic tool kit, and there are loads of how-to's on this site and others. Have a look round and you should find some good information.

Update,
Took Disco back to garage,As when I drove about 50 miles up the road the leeks started again, all over the wheel.
Anyway one of the lads at the garage steam washed the wheel then told me there was no leeks.
Dont know what they did as I left it there for a couple of hour, plus the grinding has gone ????
Must be a good power washer

cheers

PS thank god hey didnt charge me owt else

Hi Kev, it's been awhile, looked you up to see how you were getting on and found this.
Late but may help other peeps.

I've come across this before and although I take on board what others have said (and they could be right in normal circumstances) however :-

Firstly The wheel leaking again could be the oil seal having been slightly distorted when refitting the wheel. Know this can happen from personal experience LOL did it myself

Secondly The grinding noise on full lock, was probably only when you turned one way? cant remember. Was most likely the tyre rubbing something because they may have altered the steering stop. This also happened to me after a cv change. (should have done it myself )

I suspect they replaced the oil seal carefully, adjusted the steering stop n then pressure washed all the escaped oil and kept schtum :D
