Fuelling problem?

Hello all, It's hot here, high twenties. We drove from my home in Central Otago to Dunedin for Christmas with my wife's family. On the way the 1.8 began to lose power. It could hardly get up the hills!

Turned off A/C but still no better. We stopped in a small town and had a look at things under the bonnet- nothing obvious. I started again and all seemed well for the next 30km. Then it started to run rough again. When I put my foot down it would backfire which would tell me fuel is getting through to the exhaust and igniting there.

No warning lights came on, temp was fine, I have a PRT thermostat, coolant level is good, fans appear to work as required...

I can't see how this could be an ignition problem. Could it be a fuelling problem? Possibly a failing pump or a fouled filter in the pump?

Advise would be very welcome.

Wishing you all a safe and Merry Christmas from New Zealand.

Check the current consumption of the fuel pump. This is easy to do if you bridge the relay with a DMM set to Amps. The fuel pump should use 6 to 7 Amps iirc.

Hi Alan, I'm no expert on these sorts of things, might it be a HT lead or coil going wrong when the temp under the bonnet rises?

Won't be so hot in Dunners - high teens, so maybe the motor will prefer it there!

Have a good Xmas.

Back home again now. Return trip was on another very hot day, high twenties and lots of hills. Everything went fairly well until the second last hill - a yes it was a big one! Then I had the power loss again, foot down and very little power. I've rethought things and wonder about ignition problems like a faulty distributor cap/ rotor or a faulty plug lead.

Thoughts please.

Fuel pump relay is in the engine bay fuse box. You can pull the relay then link a DMM across the terminals. The ignition doesn't need to be on for this. You should see a reading of 6 to 8 amps iirc.
The rotor arm is known to fail. A failing rotor arm can cause the cap to track across. I'd change them to eliminate them. My money is on the fuel pump though. Especially if the filter hasn't been changed.

Is there a fuel pressure sensor in the injection pipe work? If it was low fuel pressure causing this, would the engine management light come up on the dash?

A backfire due to unburnt fuel, could indicate an ignition problem.

Many years ago I had a top of the range 1.3L Escort that suffered similar problems. I'd been having a bit of jip with it but it got progressively worse on a round trip from London to Sheffield. Coming back down the M1 the power loss was so bad, I was crawling along no faster than 50MPH (and its flat). That turned out to be a HT lead.

Hi Gerald, belated seasons greetings and an early Happy New Year. I've ordered a new diet' cap & rotor and plug leads. Holding off on the fuel pump but will replace that too before winter I hope.

If you think it is a fuelling problem then i would first check your filter, after that there is a small banjo bolt where the fuel goes into the pump on the left hand side of the engine head. That has a small gauze inside it which can get blocked with crap try blowing it out with a airhoze. But if its that the engine will be smoking alot and might not rev over 3k rpm

TBH I haven't needed many parts! My service stuff I just get from Supercheap or Repco. 'breaker' type parts I get from Cashels - although I recently got a wing mirror from a breakers up North.

I'm looking at belts though and did a ring round of about 1/2 dozen landie parts places - but they're all shut till 5th or 12th. The dealers (Archibalds) didn't want to know and told me that they don't stock parts and if I wanted them to get them they would have to order in from UK and would be very expensive!

I'll probably order from Rimmers.

Well I can't fault Rimmers service. When alls done the prices including freight and our GST are a lot less expensive than parts here. Did I tell you that when I contacted them about that leaky MLS gasket they refunded me. I thought that was pretty good. Freight time from UK isn't so bad either. I ordered something from Wales on the 22nd and it turned up here this morning - Royal Mail too!

There's a place in Queenstown that specialises in LR parts. Central 4WD [ [email protected] ] Send them your list and they will quote.
