I brought a 1991 dicovery 2.5d last week, My first one
i was slowing down to pull into a road and it cut out. it would start again for about 1 minute then the same it cut out again. After this it would start up and run BUT as soon as i touched the throttle it would die.

My good old dad towed me home and it seemed to of fixed itself, it was fine for a few days untill it done it again (When braking sharp!) this time it would struggle to idol but it would and sometimes id put my foot down and nothing would happen and then sometimes it would cut out.

After my good old dad started towing me home i put it in gear wilst being towed and it seemed to fix it AGAIN i have looked at videos and posts that are similar

I have ordered a new fuel filter, and lift pump.
I undone the bolt on the bottom of the sedimenter last night and Nothing came out im pretty sure there should have been something in there?

Any help greatly appriciated

If there is no fuel in the sedimenter, you have a massive air leak somewhere,as it should be full of fuel.In future only un do sedimenter from bolt on top-bottom fitting snaps easily.Look at tank fittings under boot floor hatch-prone to corrosion

Ok Brilliant! if i get a chance after work i wil have a look there..
I Asume this is causing the problem i am having with it cutting out, or mabey there might be another problem?
Thanks for your help biolandy!!!

Also if i do find that is the problem how do i go about getting the air out of the system once i have repaired/replaced the part..

The lift pump sucks fuel from the tank to feed it to the injection pump, that then feeds the injectors, what the injectors do not use is returned to the tank ,via leak off's on injectors.
The whole system needs to be free of air leaks, both air getting in and fuel getting out.
System will purge itself, over time once all the leaks are fixed.
A clear piece of pipe from filter outlet,to injection pump inlet, lets you see whether you have air or not-no bubbles allowed for best performance.
Can always run it off a bottle of diesel under bonnet to check basics are good then go air leak hunting(put lift pump intake into bottle and return line)

ok i did try to pump the lift pump manualy with no luck it didnt seem to feel like it was doing anything, i read that if the cam is in the right place it will feel like that anyway, ill see how i get on hunting for a leak, And i will report back thankyou again for your help.

Good Morning.
Last night i had a good look through the whole fuel System the top of the fuel tank is corroded but not excesive... i checked all the pipes under the bonnet and still could not find anything... BUT! the fuel filter was very very loose, i mean i could undo it with a few fingers?
Also a guy a few doors up used to have a 90 for years came over and also had a little look he thinks the diaphram may have gone in the lift pump. would the loose fuel filter posibly be my proplem? i have a new filter and a new lift pump on the way anyway so i will fit them for the sake of it anyway.
Thankyou Again Matt :)

He also told me that it is a 200tdi im not sure if it is correct but he seems pretty clued, what is the difference in the 200/300?

Not likely to be a loose filter unless it was leaking diesel. If air in the system is the problem is most likely to be getting in somewhere between the fuel tank and lift pump (pump sucks rather than pushes so air goes in rather than fuel out).

As said a prime suspect is connections on the top of the fuel tank.

I have checked the connections there and they seem air tight its a bit rusty and worn but not worn through... im not 100% sure its an air leak im just going on what BioLandy said, as he sounds like noes what hes talking about

I only know the 300tdi set up,but am sure the 200 tdi is similar,no air in fuel system is basic rule for all diesels, period.
Try running from a bottle of derv under bonnet,as I suggested to give you confidence

i will have a good look at it over the weekend give it all a good clean try and get some clear hoses.. and fit the new parts iv ordered and see how we go from there :) i really appriciate the help guys
