I was preparing my 1990 3.9 Rangie for some welding work the week after next by cracking the nuts that hold it in, and guess what it started leaking behind the shield!

And I was at work

Anyway I drove it home leaving a trail of fuel behind , drained the remaining eleven gallons out and removed the very rusty shield and tank by breaking two of the m10 bolts and every hose clip involved, rust!

Bottom line , does anyone have a good fuel tank for sale?

And also does anyone know a cheap courier service who could collect some parts form Kendal and get them back to Hampshire for me?

Many thanks guys, these classic Rangies sure are alot of work!

John

martin toole in nursling hampshire will have a tank call him on 07885399785. try to put a later plastic tank in, save any more rust issues

have been offered a plastic one from Kendal , I was wondering if the later plastc one will fit straight in?

Some guy on ebay was selling a plastic one but said it didnt fit his earlier rangie even though he was told it would.

Am I safe getting any plastic tank?

sorry i did not notice the year of your car , the plastic tank is for 1991 onwards, with the high filler, if your range rover has the filler in the centre of the wing then a plastic tank will not be able to be fitted.
as for classics being a lot of work, look at the threads from those guys with the P38's, with the constant headaches and hassles they have. a classic is a dream to have compared to one of those.

If I have got all the bits from both tanks will I be able to make it work?

Are the electrics compaitable?

Thanks

John

Anything is possible if you're willing to fiddle long enough! It depends how long you've got to make it work, and how safe you can make it!

I bought a new tank from Paddocks, along with a new shield/carrier bit. Got free post on it as it's over £50. Coated it all in waxoil underbody stuff and fitted it with new jubilees etc.

I reckoned that my last tank lasted 19 years so if the new one does half that i'll be happy.

Couldn't be bothered fannying about trying to make a plastic one fit. Haven't they got different pumps as well?

How much was your brand new tank?

Did it come with pump or did you have to fit you old one?

If so did you need any parts to do it , o rings etc?

Thnaks

John

I found the price , and have ordered a new steel one from paddocks!

Did you have to swap over the sender etc, and do I need any other parts?

You can re-use your old pump, it's up to you if you think it's ok. Mine was working fine so I just swapped it over. You have to swap the sender unit over as well, all gaskets you need are supplied with the tank. Went very smoothly for me!

Good luck with it mate.

Did you order a new cradle/guard thingy with it? If not paddocks will probably ring you tomorrow and ask if you want one. About £12 if i remember so I thought I might as well while i was down there!

Don't do it! Ye'll only end up rottin' the bottom of yer tank out when it gets full of crud;)

Well on the off chance it might fit the plastic one I was gonna get I took it into work , cleaned it and epoxied it.

Pais off now as I am gettin the steel one lol.

I hope I get those seals too!

How does the sender come out?

John

True enough busterbus, but i caked the inside of the cradle and the outside of the tank with underbody seal before assembly. Squeezed the two together and then coated the whole lot with more underbody seal. The old one didn't and that lasted since 1989 so I'm fairly confident.

The sender just has a large locking ring thing IIRC. Just tapped it round in an unscrew direction and pulled the sender out. I'm pretty sure the new tank came with a new locking bit as well. It'll all become apparent when you see it!

I got it today and it came with a new cradle too , the new tank has a drain plug in it (to aid people stealing your petrol I think lol).

I have epoxied and undersealed both of them and when they are dry I will fit tomorrow.

I hope to have it on the road only to move it , take the tank out again and weld it all next week lol

At least I will have a weekend of driving the rangie lol.

Well its in , what a bitch , four hours of rust in the eyes and inventing new swear words.

I like the way everything on a rangie either is siezed with rust or completly falls apart with rust lol.
