Hi Again all,

My 78 Series 3 is fitted with an 88 2.5 Defender Petrol Engine. Generally runs as sweet as a nut, however!! In this recent spell of hot weather it has cut out twice and just won't start again until it has cooled down. This is after traveling maybe 4 or 5 miles and when I have stopped at a junction or the like. The first time it happened and did try to start the engine and pumped the accelerator a few times keeping the key turning. A cloud of whitish smoke appeared from under the bonnet!! As soon as it cooled down off she went sweet as a nut.

The previous owner has rerouted the fuel pipe slightly and put a fuel filter in line. The bulb does not seem to hold to much fuel in it which makes me think evaporation. Would putting an electric pump help?

Anyone had similar problems, I understand it used to be fairly common in older vehicles, Mk 2 Jags, Bedford trucks etc

Any help ideas appreciated.

If the current hose is routed over the top of the engine I would move it so it runs along the top of the fan cover or along the back of the engine this will keep it cooler.

I've been reading about fitting an electric pump in mine and yes it should help, I would also fit a fuel return line which will help the fuel stay cooler.

I hope this helps!

at106,

Many thanks for your help, I will give it a go and see what happens. An electric pump for the future I think!!

Regards
Stuart
