Hi all, this is almost certainly a newbie question, but there you go...

I bought my 2004 Td4 Freelander only recently; its lovely, very clean with 97,000 miles on the clock and runs fine. I'm still waiting for the Full Service History it was advertised with though...

OK, so I had a full service done together with a vehicle health check which seems to have been pretty thorough, and they found a few points to sort but nothing pressing except one track rod end had a bit of play in it so I had that replaced on the spot. Now that I know all that, I'm wondering about the engine internals. When I picked it up it was almost empty so I filled it with ordinary diesel to get home and three weeks later I've needed to fill it again; I read somewhere that using a fuel additive like Redex is not a good idea with the Td4 engine so I filled the tank with premium diesel instead (BP Ultimate to be precise). So - three questions:

1) Is it true that ordinary diesel with Redex added is a no-no for cleaning out the injectors etc?

2) Will running it with premium diesel in every second or third tank do the same job?

3) Will either regime do anything the other won't? Or to put it another way, which would be better?

I now use Shell V Power in mine for 2 reasons.
1st, the engine definitely runs nicely on it.
2nd, there's a Shell station just down the road.
I avoid supermarket fuel at all costs and put a Halfords injector cleaner through it every month or so.

Run the fuel down to 1/4 tank or less then add the diesel forte injector cleaner, the whole 400ml then drive it like you just stole it, do this for about 3-4 miles remember you need to Italian tune it, so 30 in 2nd 50 in 3rd 70 in 4th let the speed drop to about 45 and stick straight into 3rd gear bringing it up to about 4000 revs, do this a few times over the 4 mile run once you reach home park up and leave over night.

Next day one last quick tune up on the way to get your fuel and fill up to about half way, run down to 1/4 once again then you can fill up as per usual, as above use the best diesel, this should show some improvement for you. Arctic2

I had good results by using V Power with a monthly dose of Comma Diesel Magic. It seems to have eliminated my running issues of a couple of months back.
