P38A Fuel pump leak

So my 1998 P38 2.5 decided to start dripping diesel from the injection pump yesterday, I had a quick look today and it looks like it's coming from the oval shaped cover on the side of the pump facing out.

Main question is, is there any special procedure to replace the seal/gasket on this plate? I've done a bit of googling and I've seen all manner of different answers about messing with covers affecting the running of the engine...Also don't want to just remove the cover only for half the pump gubbins to fall out into the engine bay

Hi Steve, sorry I can't help I've never had the "pleasure" of resealing the fuel pump,I think in the past @biketeacherdave did some work on one but it could have been the top seals he did, tagged him for you in case he can help.Are you sure that's the source of the leak and it's not running down from somewhere else? It could be worth Googling Bosch VE injector pump and see what that comes up with. Good luck and keep us posted ta.

Yep iv done a complete reseal on the injection pump and have posted a "how to" guide on here have a search and you should find it.

Can be done on the car

Well done Dave,I'm surprised it's not been put in the technical archive.

I know i had seen a guide but could not find it ( i was searching it wrong)

Yep would be good if admin can do that mite make it easier to find

Yes it can. Got a feeling there's a spring under that oval cover that leaps put. One each side, iirc, where the one facing the block had to be done by feel.

Did I read somewhere that you replace the bolts that hold the oval cover with longer ones(one at a time) so the spring tension can be released in a more controlled manner?

That is very much appreciated, I really don't like diving blind into these sort of things...Better to ask now rather than wait till I've taken stuff off and lost half the innards of the pump to the workshop floor/that magical place small parts go when you drop them

Or was it much longer bolts and nuts then unscrew the nuts to release the cover slowly.

Just release it carefully and get your finger over it and wiggle it out. As long as you're expecting it it isn't an issue. The one near the block is bloody awkward though. Not much space.
