Hey folks.
Finally joined as a member after tinkering with my TD5 defender for over a year now.

Having a few issues that I’m hoping could all be connected;

1) Recently on start up (about 1 in every 10 times) the engine light has been coming on. Turning off then back on again got rid of the light so I’ve foolishly ignored it until now when there is a more serious issue.

2) For the last few weeks I’ve noticed black smoke on acceleration. Nothing too heavy but noticeable when going uphill up a specific section of road on my commute.

3) Yesterday morning, engine was making a knocking noise on start-up and power was way down. I only drove to the end of the road, but turned back and parked it up for the day.
I had a quick look in the evening after work but it was already dark.
Other than the same knocking and now more black smoke from the exhaust I couldn’t see any other symptoms, but the engine did cut out on idle after a short while.

4) This morning, On start up I was now getting white smoke from the exhaust and then it cut out.

A look around at some old threads lead me to check the fuel pump relays and fuse. All ok - but now I’m aware it could be a fuel pump issue I’ve clocked that the fuel pump isn’t making its usual noise on start up. It had been making quite a loud noise which I’ve seen can be the sign of one on the way out.

Could a faulty fuel pump be the cause of all the above or just a symptom of something else that I’ve caused by running the engine when I shouldn’t have?
Sporadic engine light / black smoke / white smoke / engine cutting out.

My landy has a patched section above the fuel pump in the back so I’m guessing it’s been replaced before. With only 70k miles on the clock is it likely to have gone again?

Thanks for any help. G
