Hi all

I have a 1999 p38 diesel automatic the car will start no problem when cold after approximately 10 min she just cuts out. I have fitted a new in tank pump leak of pipes, fuel filter, battery and glow plugs. There is no hot start kit or chip. When she dies it is imposable to start again until she is cold again, she shows no warning lights when she dies. After she dies if i don't switch the ignition of there is a clicking noise that comes from the FIP and if i throw water over the FIP she will start strait up again.
Now for the question is there a fix and what is making that clicking noise is it normal i am quite capable withe a set of spanners i just need some direction and advice

Please help !!!!!!

I'm aware that the Fuel temperature sensor and top injection pump seal can be serviced by the average DIY mechanic but what would cause the clicking noise and am i right that it might be the temperature sensor at fault

Besides the cut off sensor, you have electrical connectios to 1.injection timing device,2.quantity servo control unit, 3.quantity servo control unit potentiometer, and 4.fuel temp sensor. I guess diagnostics is the best way to go.

That would rule out the injection timing device as that's at the bottom of the FIP. You could change the fuel temp sensor but you may find you still have the problem but the cold water "fix" seems to point that way. Diagnostic's to be sure.

Am i right to think that the injection timing device would be stationary if the engine has staled and there for would not be able to make the noise

Witch wire would i have to disconnect to force the ECM into limp home mode so i could check if the fuel temp sensor is at fault. If i am wright that would stop it from just cutting out and leaving me stranded ??

Fuel temp sensor will not cause a click. Faulty quantity servo would or lack of fuel in the top of the pump which normally dampens the noise the servo makes. Check the clear pipe filter to injection pump for air. Other than that diag.

Its not such a silly question i first had the pipes on the wrong way round but realized it as i was not able to bleed the filter and corrected it asap

I have now removed the top of the FIP to get access to the fuel temp sensor at room temp the resistance on the sensor is 27.6 ohm am i wright to think that is to high a resistance for room temp and that the ECM would think that the fuel is boiling to soon and disabling the motor

When or if the fuel temp sensor fails a preset of around 60 degrees is used by the ECM. Fuel temp is generally only used by the ECM for starting, if temp is high more fuel will be injected if low less fuel. What is the idle speed? Still say it's the quantity servo. Get diag on it you can guess for ever.
