Hi All,

Just returned after sitting on M5 for two hours. With some tools and engine cover removed, looks like the Fuel pressure regulator gasket has failed. Up against a bit as due to tow caravan to France on Wednesday.

Replaced Fuel Pressure regulator (FPR), Gasket and O rings, 500miles ago. FPR was advertised as a Bosch part, put when arrived, didn't appear to be which, seller did admit.

If the FPR was to fail, would it cause gasket/O rings to fail? ie over pressure.

On trying to re-start engine, M&S green lights were flashing, but not before we stopped. Could this be another issue?

Time scale for parts is my main concern.

Any input welcome.

Discovery 2001, TD5 Auto, 60,000 miles.

Thanks

Hi All,

Update, having thought about it overnight, thought bolts may have been loose, but checked and stripped today, bolts were still at correct torque, so now thinking, perhaps the Fuel pressure regulator has failed.

Would it come out of there at such a pressure? reluctant to put hand in direct line of spray.

With regard to the M&S lights, could it be gearbox has faulted, as when I lost power, it would of meant the truck, may have thought it was being towed? only guessing.

Any Ideas?

Thanks

If the regulator fails it will very often leak diesel down the side of the engine, and on the manual versions if left it can contaminate the clutch. changed mine on my defender TD5 a couple of weeks ago. The regulator is there to maintain a pressure of 4 bar at the injector common feed.
sounds like the regulator you fitted could be a bad one, if you are looking at a trip abroad it might pay you to bite the bullet and fit a good one, I bought one off e-bay with gaskets and o rings but don't know if you have the time, I am not sure if the dealers sell just the regulator, I have seen the whole thing with the aluminium housing but it's a bit more expensive.
Maybe start to trawl the Internet and see if one of the parts suppliers can sell you the bits you need, either express delivery or local pick up.

Here is the one I bought but beware it comes from Spain

Hi Raywin,

Thanks for the reply. As i say, change mine about 500 miles ago, after I had the drips, I suppose I was wondering, if it was to fail big time, if it would spray diesel out with some force?

Thanks again.

The pressure comes from the in tank diesel pump which is fed to the gallery in the head this feeds the injectors, it is designed to keep a pressure of 4 bar inside the rail, so if it leaks it would not be releasing full injector pressure which is huge.
Remember the leak will probably start with a small break in the diaphragm of the regulator or a failure of the o ring seal so it will only weep at first but probably develop quite quickl, and it will affect the supply to the injectors which will give you problems.
I was concerned that our great friends in France will clap their hands as they help you get rid of your holiday money if this gives up while you are there.

Thanks Raywin, quite agree about loosing car and holiday money to our European cousins.

Phoning round and can get a proper Bosch regulator by mid-day and gear box codes checked this afternoon. If FPR works out. Fingers crossed.

Thanks for your input.

Hope it works out OK, it did not take long to change mine just be sure to keep everything spotlessly clean, wipe around the regulator before you start and give the housing a good clean then blast with air if possible before you re assemble, you don't want any muck in the injector system, and run the bleed sequence three or four times when you have done it (before you put the engine cover back), helps you to check if everything is sealed up correctly and it also purges the system of air and any slight contamination.
Happy holiday

I think the difference is in the housing and the gasket which seals it to the cylinder head, the 10p engine has a different return line from the 15p unit, but I think the actual regulator unit which is held inside the housing by a circlip is the same. I can't be 100% sure of this as I only have experience of my 15p unit, but the repair kit comprises of one regulator with sealing o rings and two different sealing gaskets so that you can repair either model using the same kit.

I am sure that for people who use their Land Rover on a daily basis or for long range trips the official parts are a sound investment.

Well all. Just to say all fixed. Good service from local suppliers. On removing u/s regulator, found small green O ring had failed. No faults found on gearbox, except level. Checked today and fine. Thanks for everyones input.
