So I've worked out that the oily patch on my drive isn't engine oil but diesel.

This started about the time that I changed to Biodiesel. Also it can be difficult to start after being parked overnight, making me think it may be air getting into the system as the fuel comes out.

Spent ages today trying to find out where it's coming from and have nearly sussed it.

With the car parked in its normal fairly steep nose down position, diesel slowly runs round the flange on the lift pump and then I think drips off via various parts of the engine to the floor.

It's quite slow leak, can only just see it building up and it didn't drip while I watched.

With the Disco the other way round (nose up hill) I couldn't find any trace.

Seems to me that it's coming from the end of the fuel pipe out of the lift pump - ie from the pump to the filter - but it is very hard to be certain.

Oh yeah - this is without the engine running, and I can't see anything worse with the engine running - it isn't squirting out or anything

Question????

What should I check, fiddle with without causing more problems?

Do the pipe connections come loose or is it more likely the pipe split?

Knowing my luck, if I disconnect the pipe to check it I'll empty the whole tank, break something and not be able to get anything back together ;-)
so I thought I'd ask for advice first. This is my commuting vehicle and it's usable at the moment so I don't want to break it any more than I have to.

Disconnect the fuel pipe, clean it up, put some PTFE around the olive and fasten it back up, stop the leak.

The hard starting may be air or it may just be bio diesel ignition issues.

That sounds far too easy ;)

Do you mean PTFE as in the PTFE tape you use round house radiator connections? I have a roll of that left from fitting thermostatic rad valves.

Yes - PTFE will withstand mineral oils i.e. diesel. The leak will almost certainly be from a fuel pipe, unless the diaphram has burst but that would lead to LOTS of diesel spilling out when the engine was on.

It's probably on the suction side, hence no leaking when the engine is on.
