Hi Group - this question is loosely rover related cos i tow my boat with a 90 and its got a rover V engine! Ive always been a bit unhappy with the fuel gauge sender - its a simple float affair with sliding contacts onto a coil to give a variable resistance. My concern is that this is mounted inside the fuel tank with no form of gaseous isolation. when i measure voltage to earth at the connections, i have 12v which causes me concern! i have played in the dark in trying to create a spark by momentarily grounding these connections to earth but this fortunately has proved unsuccessful!
Power supply to the gauge comes from a small sealed box on the dash gauge - can anyone tell me if this is a standard set up and perfectly safe or should i remove the wires and use a dip stick?

thanks in anticipation

steve

That's how the one on my s3 works - for years the gauge kept going intermittent until I realised the sender terminal was shorting out on the seat box cover plate immediately under my bum. No explosion, though. There's probably more risk attached to owning a boat....

ps the box behind the dash is a voltage regulator - if you are getting 12v continuously at the sender it may be faulty. Does your gauge work properly?

hope these help may not be correct but give you the basic's

thanks Gents - the diag and pics are almost identical to what I have - so presumably this set up in the top of a 20 gallon tank of four star is considered safe?
