Hi , my defender 90 fuel gauge is doing my head in.i have replaced the gauge, sender unit and run new wires from tank to gauge.the needle moves up and down going around corners and falls of the scale when the low fuel light comes on. does anyone know if there should be a voltage stabilizer in the circuit or something else?

How much fuel do you have in the tank. Might sound daft but even when the needle shows zero there's normally a couple of pints or odd gallon and half sloshing to even register. Did you test before fitting in the sender unit first by connecting up but moving the sender arm to see the needle move up fully and down.

I filled the tank and sitting stationary gauge was reading 3/4 full but when driving it was moving up & down like a yo-yo,after around 250 miles the warning light came on and the gauge dropped below empty.any ideas?

sounds like the sender unit is faulty. Can happen pending who supplies it. Only advise is query the supplier for a return and exchange.

Got a similar issue following the replacement of my sender during the cross member swop-out. Bought a Lucas part and to date it hasn't read correctly and although it seems to read across the full spectrum it hasn't dropped below a third of a tank. I'm going to whip it out and have tinker when I can be arsed. Currently I'm relying on the Force to know how much fuel I have.

can be sloshing and the gauge sender unit not calibrated properly ie the arm with float. Think the same way a toilet ballcock needs adapting in situ. A tank can be larger or deeper to effect misaligned sender unit.
