Fuel gauge help

If my fuel gauge is intermittent but the low fuel light still works. Any ideas what it could be? It’s 2000 td5 90 defender.

You need to test the gauge and the sender independently. to find out which is at fault. I am not up to speed with the TD5 gauges but the older ones could be tested by earthing the gauge and the needle should move to the full position. If this is the case the guage is working.
All the fuel sender is is a large variable resistor changing its resistance as the float arm moves.

You do not say how it is intermittent. does it sometimes not read at all, does it give erratic readings, des the needle swing about while driving? ?

sometimes it doesn't read at all.
