Hi thanks for all your help with my last request brake light problem all resolved now. Still waiting to look at matrix.

New problem last weekend, purchased deisel which looks to have been dirty, started with regret to start, then got slugish and lost power and will not start at all now.

Anyone changed fuel filter on TD4 03 apparrently under rear fuel tank.

Many thanks in advance

Ally

apparrently under rear fuel tank.

... The 1.8 petrol fuel filter is in the fuel tank.

For the TD4 ...

Filter - main
19.25.02

Remove

1. Disconnect battery earth lead.
2. Remove screw securing fuel filter housing to bracket.

WARNING: Fuel vapour is highly flammable and in confined spaces is also explosive and toxic. Always have a fire extinguisher containing foam, CO2 , gas or powder close at hand when handling or draining fuel.

3. Lift and tilt fuel filter housing away from bracket.
4. Disconnect multiplug from fuel filter head.
5. Position absorbent cloth beneath fuel filter.
6. Note orientation of fuel hoses, fully depress clips and carefully disconnect both fuel hoses from filter head.

CAUTION: Always fit plugs to open connections to prevent contamination.

7. Remove fuel filter and head assembly.
8. Hold fuel filter body and unscrew filter head.

Refit

1. Clean fuel filter and mating face.
2. Lubricate sealing ring of new filter with clean oil.
3. Fit filter to filter head, tighten by hand until seal contacts filter head, then tighten a further half turn.
4. Fit fuel filter to housing.
5. In the correct orientation, connect hoses to fuel filter head.
6. Connect multiplug to fuel filter head.
7. Fit fuel filter housing to bracket and secure with screw.
8. Remove absorbent cloth.
9. Connect battery earth lead.

If the fuel is that badly contaminated, you may need to drain the tank. Is your fuel pump working?

Cheers

Early TD4's had the fuel filter under the bonnet, in later ones it is at the rear of the car. If you do a search on this site you will find details. Before starting make sure you have the right type of filter. the two types are totally different. A main dealer will tell you which you need if you give the chassis number.

Hubby changed the fuel filter which is under rear driverside wheel arch and it did not make a difference car still won't start.
Yesterday i turned the car over while hubby was by the pump under the wheel arch and that seems to be working i.e. making a noise.
He thinks after lifting the rear seats (primary fuel pump not the secondary pump) that it may be this pump, anyone else encounted this problem?

Thanks again

Hi

Just a quick note to say having changed the fuel filter and having called both the AA and the Rac on two seperate occassions neither of them could find the fault. Towed it to a garage with the same equipment has Landrover but at half the cost and labour costing half the price they detected two new injectors they then recommend changing all 4.
4 plus diagiostics machine and labour of 5 hours £851.

many thanks for all your help

Check your rear [in tank] fuel pump first . . . .tell hubby to go into search [lot written] if one injector went ,it would cough un splutter but still start. . . . .na check pump first. . . .:)

He did check the pump under the arch and he could feel vibration, also diesel was getting through to the front of the engine. We got it started with the Rac once went out and lost power then it picked up fine as if nothing had happened then we broke down on the same night called AA after a 2 hour wait they could not find the fault even though the engine management light was still on when they arrived. Pulled off only to find 1 mile down the road one/blue smoke and was taken home 2 hours later by the AA.
Day later car wouldnot have it at all, hence why we towed it by solid tow bar to garage.
Starting it now is such a joy to hear.

£851! I'm obviously in the wrong job and will relocate asap back to UK and set up in diesel diagnostics. I can't believe how many new injectors are fitted to these vehicles when there are many excellent companies around who will overhaul and match all four injectors for £300. Please refer to the awesome Roverron and diesel tuning articles to corroborate my claims. Two faulty injectors would not prevent the engine from starting by the way.
