Fuel Consumption & general running costs

Hi to all, a couple of days ago i discovered to my joy that an average Defender 90 would not be too expensive for me to insure. I have always assumed that becase of insurers basing cover heavily on engine size it would be out of the question for a 19 year old with no no claims to pheasably run one insured. It seems as if the Defender is an exception to the general rule. In fact the quotes i have had for a 1985 90 2.5d were cheaper than for a Peugeout 309 1.1!

The main problem is the general running costs though, would anyone be able to tell me what sort of MPG i could get off this vehicle? Mainly for around the town use with a jaunt out to the country every now and then. Any responses would be very welcome and much appreciated. Thanks

You Should Expect 25-30 Mpg In General, Assuming Engine Is In A Reasonable State.running Costs- Its A Landrover ,so Not Expensive For Routine Servicing, But You May Be Frequently Busy!

You'll be looking at mpg in the low-to-mid 20's if you're lucky. It will of course depend on how heavy you are with your right foot (the lighter the better), what type of rubber you want it to wear (road-biased tyres will help to return a higher mpg), and how well the engine/vehicle has been maintained thus far in it's life.

That aside, once you own a landrover you'll never go back!!!

Cheers chaps, i had been expecting around 20-25 mpg.

come from a land where it's km/litre so i'm getting a good 11km per litre on 265/75/16 tyres.

cheap? im 19 and i was gettin quoted the thick end of 2Grand! where have you been trying?

Try CIS as I paid £1200 for TPFT at the age of 18 and on an Irish licence. You have to be careful about the modifications that you include and anything to do with improved performance is not popular. Even sureterm are about £1300.
