Picked up my first landy today and despite a couple of faults im really happy... One of them is that the mechanism that winds up the window is in a pretty bad way. When you wind the window up, the mechanism loses traction with the glass and it slides down a bit. This sometimes happens 3 or more times when closing it completely. The doors also require quite a slam to shut and occasionally the window drops halfway down when you do it...

So to try and get to the root of the problem, I took the door card off (which had all sorts of odd screws in it holding it in place) and the bolts which hold the metal housing protecting the mechanism but part of this was actually welded to the door skin (about 2cm long section). This meant i couldnt see in to the mechanism properly to see what was wrong. By this time it was starting to get dark so i put the door back together. ill see if i can get into it tomorrow to see whats wrong.

It was obvious someone had done a sort of botch repair of the window at some time in the past as the window wasnt original and as i said the door had been welded up in the place of a bolt. My current theory is that the cog that turns as you move the winder is missing a couple of teeth but I am new to landies and would like to know if youve seen this problem before and whether you think its better to try and get it fixed or just buy a new door... This is an 18yr old landy so there is still a fair bit of rust behind the door card.

Will take a few photos tomorrow so you can see the vehicle and also the problem.

Thanks,
Jack

The most common problem is with the lifting channel on the bottom of the glass - it rots away. Take the door card off, wind the window right down and you'll be able to see it.
If its really bad, like mine was, the lifting channel may not even be on there, and the glass will be resting on the scissor mechanism:eek:

If its had it, they can be bought on ebay for a tenner

Unfortunately i dont think this is the problem. The window only slips down when the winder is at certain points in its rotation but i will take another look today.

Thanks for the help though,
Jack.

Hi jack
Sounds like what my 90 window does, my problem as I suspect yours is similar, is the teeth on either the handle cog (dont know its correct term) have lost some teeth, my problem is the bit the 'cog' moves has got several teeth missing and although it will wind window up a bit it slips and window drops.
I tent to put both hands either side of the window and lift it and the handle turns itself and holds.
My doors don't shut without a *slam* :D

Didnt actually have time to have a look at the door again today, but found you can get mechanisms for the window pretty easily under £30. Ill take a look at the door next time ive got a chance to let you know what i find... Thanks for the post if i replace the mechanism ill let you know how it goes and if its easy or not. My thoughts are at the moment £30 is not much compared to the damage / loss a theif could cause.

I think i was looking at a mechanism with the scissor bit (hope you know what i mean, sorry for un-technical language!) attached too but i cant remember. have been at work today so i havent been able to take a closer look yet. im away for a few days so ill look at it again when i get back.

so eventually got round to sorting the problem out... I have a broken window regulator. After searching and searching for somewhere that has one it stock I eventually ordered one on ebay for £18 delivered. Anyone want to guess what the local dealer offered it for?

Guess higher.. !

The doors are sagging a bit meaning you have to slam them very hard to make them fit into place when closed. I don't mind slamming them hard for now so I haven't bothered to fix it. I'd rather spend my money on something else for it. If I get round to it I'll have to see if it is the door hinges or the doors themselves which are at fault and go from there I guess...

Ok so I ordered the regulator and it arrived very quickly. When I got back from work I went to fit it but I missed one of the sliding sections. So I went to undo the bolts to put it in properly and ... smash .... the window fell straight through the door and shattered into trillions of tiny tiny pieces halfway across the gravel driveway and some into the grass to the side.... DOH

Now I am stuck for ideas over how I am going to get to work tomorrow !

Believe it or not the dealer quoted me £104.81 including vat on the regulator....!! It has now started raining but should be better weather tomorrow so fingers crossed... I managed to bribe a lift in today so I was okay! Lets hope they are in the same mood tomorrow cause I haven't been able to order another window yet :D
