Many moons ago I fitted new balls o_O
They have worked well but more recently the steering has gone a bit twitchy, I have a clonk on braking and in 4WD the steering has always been notchy and pully.
I thought for my next trick  I’d strip each hub down to its knickers and rebuild ‘again’ with new ball seals, reshim and all the joy of spring balances etc etc.
I’ve never done a UJ and think I’ve got the idea of beating the old one out and the like. I dare say there are a plethora of replacement crissy crossy bearing bits but is there a definitive size/make I should be selling a kidney for.
I’ve no idea but feel I should be doing this before the frosts descend and mi delicate pinkeyes stick to t’thiron.

Have you a good vice or press?
Need on if these to press UJ caps in. If you beat them with a hammer the needle roller pins fall out & your in a world of pain.

look for GKN with a grease nipple

You can do it with a hammer, but risk of issues if you do.

I think in 4wd, notchy steering on hard road surfaces is quite normal, especially when cornering.

They are not particularly difficult with a good vice. Not sure why you would need a grease nipple, they run within the swivel balls in oil?
That’s what I was thinking.

I may have glossed over the severity a little
My wrist braces are losing the battle :D

Not worried about the needle bearings when beating ‘out’ and I have many viceso_O a couple of which are mecul ones on the bench :p
I take it they are all the same size as I’m not sure what year the front axle is. Could be 2, could be 3, could be off a Vauxhall Victor for all I know.
So is the general consensus GKN.

GKN decent, I did try britparts own a few years back, was not long before they had play, and greased weekly as well, this was a on a 90 front prop, I think the replacement GKN u/j is still on there, might be 10 yrs ago I fitted it?

Notchy steering.
Could be dry top pins on swivels.
Also old track ends could be dry in the steering set up.
It’s wandering. Could be many things but I’ve already replaced most stuff so I’d say the biggest culprit is ball pins. It’s the single knock on braking that points that way.
May as well do the UJs this time while I’m in there.
Just thought there may be a super bearing I’m unaware of. Like Timkin for wheels.

I just gave away two ujs on sunday typical you could have had them for nowt.
Timkin bearings for me every time. :)

As I’ve no idea what I’m buying I’ve just ordered GKN parts. I won’t know what bits I need for the pins until I’m in there and it seems daft to get a fifty quid kit for each side when I doubt I’ll need all the bits.

A series dunt have CVs. It has Prop UJs and front halfshaft UJs. The halfshaft ones are slightly smaller.
I know, that's why I was confused. For some reason I thought you mentioned cv's in the original post, which I now realise, You didnt. I can only blame my confusion on a lack of booze.
