Now my friend, take that wooly hat from over your eyes and have a think why Range Rovers, Land rovers and things of their ilk have serviceable U/Js. Then why some other vehicles don't. Have you ever seen a Range Rover or Land Rover with sealed for life U/Js? Because if you have the wrong ones have been fitted. You talk about off road, are you telling me you do a full season of off roading wading through water and mud without ever greasing the props, because the mileage does not reach the service point. Then expect the U/Js to last. Don't talk through your arse. The dried grease and **** in the U/J that is stopping the grease going in, is because the joint has not been greased regularly enough. Simple as that. If you can't get grease in it is going to fail sooner rather than later. You really do make me wonder sometimes.
Your assuming again, its my range rover not a defender if I wanted to go off roading I would use the correct Vehicle,i do like my wings and panels defenders would be less prone to damaging, there you go again thinking that I dont realise if your Wading or in the Sahara desert of course your going to need to be more Vigilant! When it comes to greasing servicing, we are all clowns are we, it's for going to work , up the track and pulling my caravan going on Agricultural shows for god sake know all. So you buy a 4x4 the uj not got a nipple on it , has happend you know you think people are going to change it because it hasn't got a nipple or when it wears get real fella ...,

Not quite the same scenario is it. If you should be able to get grease in and you can't it indicates a problem. You get a warning. With a sealed for life unit you get no warning until it,s too late. Personally i think sealed units are an abortion.

Yep you is right Tony got over 200k on uj's with a nipple on them, and when you go through a lot of ****/mud give them a squirt next day to get the **** out. Got to grease them more than once a year

No nipple/sealed uj's just a marketing things so sell more parts from excess damage to a vehicle when they let loose

Next time, if ever, you go into hospital for an operation, don't forget to Google it first. I am sure the surgeon will be glad of any advice you want to give him. Think you mentioned you were in motor trade at some point. What were you, a storeman or a petrol pump attendant?

Neither,I am self taught I don't need garages I've learnt all by my very self didn't need to go to mechanics school , grew up pulling things apart, and learning to ask that's all I need to get by...,not text books

Ahh i see an happy amatuer very commendable, but that explains your sometimes mechanical naivety.

Opps Opps...... its getting heated and you both have good opinions - I declaire a draw!

ps Wammers it's 'amateur' but you are forgiven under the circumstances. And Defender gods sake might be better?

Come on Make-Up.

I think we all get the point.

No probs with typo's, we all do it. I just mentioned it as a distraction to the argument. And yes I prefer UJ's with nipples and regularly grease them. They don't last forever but what does? In fact have never come across sealed units, can't believe they were fitted to any real Land Rover ??

There are sealed units fitted to cars, but not to vehicles that are designed to dip a little more than their toes in muddy water. If the pressure that can be applied by a reasonable grease gun cannot put grease through the U/J, which should be reasonably easy to do, then to me the U/J would be suspect. Also observing what the grease expelled contains is also an indicator of joint condition.

I love you really I'm not saying there fitted by Landrover, just that I have bought a Landrover secondhand before with one fitted and I'm not taking it of unto
I need to xx

Just an update.
I've finished doing the radius arm bushes :)
Basically had to cut through the bolts as they were rusted to the bush sleeves. The rubber HAD come unbonded from the sleeve, the rubber itself was perfect.
No problem getting the old one out just chissled through the rubber and snapped out the plastic outer sleeve. Poly bush simply pushed in.

If anyone is planning doing this I did learn that it is best to rest the car on axle stands on the axle so there is no twisting on the axle. This is so that the anti-roll bar is not under any twist load and the axle is not being twisted. I has both twisted as I still had the jack supporting some of the load under the diff.
It's probably obvious as it didn't come up in the thread but for someone doing the job first time it helps to know.

Thanks for your help (and the amusing discussions on UJs!!)

cheers
