I'm trying to get to the bottom of a knock coming from the front of my TD4 It happens on bumps but not always, but always on a stretch of downhill off road I use regularly. Ive briefly had it up on a wheels free lift but couldn't see anything obvious. I didn't have a decent lever to put any pressure on the steering joints. The only movement I could detect was where the track rod connects to the rack but not much. Any advice gratefully received.
 
I had an annoyed knock which appeared on certain roads but I couldn't find any play anywhere on any joints, so bought a pair of genuine drop links, fitted them, and the noise went away. Once off the car the drop link balljoints were just a little loose but obviously were worn enough to give the knock.
 
I would go with droplinks also , Mine is on it's second set of genuine one's
Do fit genuine LR droplinks as the after market one's don't last long !
It's normally the top ball joint that's gone .
 
I had similar issue, changed the drop links and knocking didn't go away. Changing the anti roll bar bushes sorted mine.

I bought a pair of genuine LR links from a main stealer at £38 the pair together with genuine new ARB bushes a few months back and fitted them. I now have a knock and find that one of the links is sloppy and the other side is also getting slack.
Contacted the dealer and was told that they cannot be replaced as they are a "Wear & Tear" item plus they were not fitted by a LR dealership.
The car has never been taken off road or abused.
This my second run in with LR over the quality of their spares...I bought a new water pump for my P38 a few years ago and fitted it to a brand new engine, it failed after one month. Again the stealer didn't want to know and said it could have been incorrectly fitted or the drive belt was too tight...strange that because the V8 has a serpentine belt and the tension is automatically determined by the spring loaded tensioner, the same as the TD4.
Never again will I buy genuine parts, I will stick with Britpart..at least they have a no quibble warranty and fall over themselves to sort any quality problems out.
 
Irish rover - contact LR uk customer care - parts have a 12 month warranty for manufacturing defects - drop links shouldn't wear in a few months.
 
Drop links replaced and problem solved. While I was under the front end I noticed the four bolts that hold the front under frame on were all loose. I'm guessing that some work has been done needing the front to be removed and the re-fitting has not been that meticulous. Makes you wonder what else is loose

Britpart stuff comes with a 12 month guarantee which they are more than happy to honour...just phone customer services if you have a problem. I have found them very helpful in the past.

you will not get many spares for the p38 now
