Front end rumbles 300tdi

Hi all
Over the past months a rumble has been getting increasingly worse from I am convinced the front axle/drive train.Some days the ruble is more pronounced when some lock is applied to the left at speeds over 40mph -other days the same noise but only when turn slightly to the right .There are no odd bits of metal etc in axle oil- the cv joints dont click on either lock, there is no play in the front propshaft or joints. There is no play in either front wheel bearings. All ball joints track rod ends etc have been replaced as thought it could be metal to metal on a worn out bush transmitting road/wheel rumble. Dont think it is the transfer box or gearbox because if you knock it out of gear the rumble is still there.No undue vibrations thrugh the gear stick either.
Anyone got any suggestions before i pull the diff out and replace it? thats all i can think it can be -bearings in the planet wheels perhaps?
Anyone got a good but inexpensive diff too?

Is it constant? Is it a low pitch rumble? Is there any knocking? Diffs tend to whine rather than rumble and would usually whine under load. Oil levels ok? Even though there is no play in wheel bearing do you hear this noise when you spin them up? Does the pitch go up and down with speed or revs?

Hi thanks for reply- the rumble is low down on the tone scale. It is not constant- the oil levels are fine and there is no rumble when spin wheels up off the ground.There is no play in either wheel bearings. The bizzarre thing is the fact that the rumble sometimes is on left hand and sometimes right hand lock- kicks in as soon as you turn the steering wheel slightly. Theres is some whine from the transmission but have been told this is quite normal for a high mileage disco. Drove it for 20 miles yesterday and there was no rumble to speak of at all then just came back. The noise is almost like the tye noise/rumble you can get on some road surfaces when running with tyres that are mixed use on/off road. Agh!

It could be tyre noise.
Check the noise on different road surfaces. Concrete roads tend to be very noisy, for example.

Check your prop shaft UJs very carefully, and make sure the UJ flange nuts are tight. Has the prop shaft been off? Has it been pulled apart and the ends not lined up properly when the splines have been fitted together? The two ends must be set up against each other or it's rumbly.

Borrow another set of wheels and tyres and take her for a run.

Finding noises can be a bummer!
