Yes, no and maybe.
From the parts book for SIIIs 88" and 109" from October 1980 onwards are the
same - except if you have a 109" 1 tonner. Pre June 1980 the parts book
shows different part numbers.
Hope that makes things clearer - of course if you have a
SII/SIIA.............

Thanks....makes things as clear as mud. The local Landrover agent said they
were different but couldn't tell me how, even when he was looking at them
both. I have (since Saturday) a SIIa (according to it's numbers built in
1963) 88" with SIII gearbox, unknown diffs (4.1 ratio AFAICT), military spec
strengthened axle housings, NZ military spec raised suspension (yes, they
raised the 88" here), heavy duty half shafts and drive flanges, a Defender
bonnet & grille, 6 cylinder Holden engine, SIII brakes (that don't work),
twin fuel tanks, SIII wipers, FWH, rust free chassis & bulkhead, and god
knows what else that I haven't discovered yet. I'll have to play match the
driveshaft I guess.

In this case they may or may not be the same. (Again, excluding the ENV
axle).
When the 109 was fitted with a Salisbury rear diff, (optional on S2a,
standard on S3) this had 24 spline outer ends on the axle shafts, instead
of ten. So that the axle drive flanges would be the same on front and rear,
the front drive axles of the 109 were changed to match. Late in S3
production, probably the 1980 date given, all outer ends, front and rear,
88 & 109, were changed to 24 spline.
The problem you may have, is that the parts are interchangeable in sets, so
that what is on your vehicle may well have been changed. I have heard of a
Landrover having 24 spline on one side and 10 on the other side of the
front axle, and it would be quite common to have a different setup front
and rear.

I've just put LWB brakes and FWH onto my SWB, and ive swapped the
halfshafts too since the LWB ones had more splines, and i wanted the
hubs.
SWB has something like 10 or so big teeth, and the LWB has lots more
smaller teeth.
This could be because the LWB axle was a post-1980 one and they all
changed after that? Ive never looked at na older LWB. Apart from the

To make it a bit easier I am pretty certain the front prop shaft is the same
from the 88/109 Series 1 up to the end of Series 3, except for the ENV
axle and the Stage 1 V8, and the six (which has the gearbox further back).
