I'm about to replace the front door hinges and have loosened them all with a posi#4 and impact driver already. Just didn't want to completely remove them yet as I'm unsure if the captive nuts behind remain captive in the pillar. Will they fall down inside or is there a way of accessing them through the door pillar? On the 2nd row doors there is a hole behind the nuts but nothing for the front doors. Anyone done this job recently?
Cheers, J

I would if i was doing it. Oh and they look like this

Just to add... once the doors are off if you put a thin flat blade screwdriver through the captive nut so you touch the back of the door pillar... when you slip it across you are less likely to drop it down the pillar. I did the reverse when fitting them back as they can spring off. Fit the hinges to the pillars but dont screw tight then put the door in and swing the hinge across and screw them into the door and tighen them all up.
Dont forget........ the hinges may look the same but they are not, there is a top and a bottom one. Match them up with your old ones first or you will wonder why you cant get the holes lined up.... like I did :)

quite easy really....

If ye do manage tae drop one down inside, then all ye need is a magnet and a long screwdriver / metal thing to fish it out through the holes. Do the top one furst as it's easier to get the captive nuts out o' the bottom hole;)

Oh, and use plenty copper grease when ye put the bolts back in;)

jonnie, if you need a hand give me a shout, not got much on this weekend.

Buster - I have to swap my bolts over for stainless ones, would it be worth taking the doors off and changing the J clips to? I was hopeing to just take 1 out at a time and replace them. the last time I took the doors off to swap them I had a right mare lineing them up and the hinges and that bollix. even lost a few clips down the bulkhead (never to be seen again).

If ye changed them not that long ago then ah 'think' they should be okay mate. Mind and use plenty copper grease on thum;)
Dunno if ah mentioned it before or not, but if ye lose the clips down the bulkhead ye can fish them out with a long screwdriver and a magnet through the bottom hinge hole;)
Might be worth gettin' them out anyways as they could be sittin' in there rottin' away the bottom of the bulkhead!

it was my old 90 buster ;) when i bought the doors of trewy.

my new one is a 96 so the J clips will be pretty old... think i might leave em  copper grease the new bolts and see what happens.

Just had a thought....
If ye do need to replace them keep yer door closed and take the two bolts out of one hinge on the bulkhead side and fold back the hinge so's ye could replace thum that way...... never done it mesel' yet and it's just a thought;):D

Cheers Griff
