I've just read the workshop manual and there is some stuff about using a dial gauge and setting end play to between 0.08 to 0.25mm. Also tighten to 50Nm, back 90° and tighten to 10Nm. What's the back door bodge for this stuff ? Also is a good idea to renew the grease seal while I'm in here.

If the seals are Ok now, then they should be ok to refit - but.... as they are cheap, it might be worth putting new in, if they have been in a while.....
Front wheel bearings are better set up properly IMHO, they are, ahem, sort of, important. even with decades of experience of the damn things, I always use a torque wrench to set them up.
