God i hate my land rover "sometimes"

Driving along i can hear a noise sounds like a turning noise coming from the Front Diff. Gets faster as you go faster and so on.
I havent long changed the pinion seal - not that i think i could have done anything wrong doing that! and i have greased up my props not so long ago.
I have also put a 200tdi engine and gearbox in it. But the diffs should be the same for an N/A

is there anything obvious i could check if i took the dif apart or is it all too complicated in there?

id be worried if i couldnt hear a turning noise from my diff

can you discribe the sound a bit better ?

Well, yeh there is that - but this is rather Metallic. sounds like a knocking noise as if something wasnt quite lined up or loose and catching rubbing on something else

Another way to describe it is - sometimes when you change gear you can hear the pick up of slack - like this but on every rotation of the prop - and coming from the Diff of course.

I had somthing similar on my classic which turned out to be play in the sliding joint on the front propshaft.get under the car and feel for up and down movement in the prop as on mine the vibration was transmitting though various parts of the car.

and you put a far more powerful engine in it so it could be showin wear that was'nt obvious before .....

Im afraid to say theres no play in it.

I have jacked a wheel up and spun it as fast i could by hand and theres no noise it turns relatively freely.
Which confuses me a little, i guess it means its only when the full weight of the vehicle is involved eg: not jacked up or only happens when you go faster than 5mph. Or combination of both - I have taken the prop off Flange off and looked at the connecting spline - that does appear to have a few mm of play - Is that normal? as soon as you put the flange back on all play is gone though?

Maybe ill take the diff off - never done it before bu i imagine once you undo all the fixings it just pulls off in one bug lump? Hoping for some guidance if it comes to that?

Check your CV joints, sounds very much like it could be them as opposed to your diff. Diffs are pretty hard wearing so id be surprised if it was that. Plus they'd be more likely to make noise when driving with plenty of friction involved and then not when just spinning them.
cheers

I wish it was the Cv But its definatly the Diff.

I am certain there shouldnt be any play in the Pinion spline which makes me think Pinion bearing - although if i need a special tool to remove this i may as well get another diff for the sake of £100.

Anyone know about Pinion bearings, shims etc.

When I changed the seal I had to remove the prop, retaining nut and then the flange pulls of the spline.
I marked up the Prop and the Flange – but not the location of the flange on the spline "idiot" – its possible I put this on 1 or 2 splines out clockwise or anti from when I removed it – would this make a difference – how would I realign it?
