My 2003 TD4 AUTOMATIC has still got a knock if I accelerate too quickly so How do I check if the Front Bush is at fault?. Nothing too technical please.

Get underneath and rock diff forward and backwards. Look for 'witness' marks on prop connection and front end of diff where it may have bashed car or subframe.
If in doubt change it, you'll need to undo all three to drop diff to get old one out and new one in - make sure you orient the new one the same way as you took the old one out otherwise it turns into a Chinese puzzle - except it is upside down in with everything about your head and the blood running out of your arms !

Good luck. My experience - if it is a 2003 rubber bush unchanged since new it is probably knackered !

I have just been on the LR Direct web page to purchase a front Bush for the Rear Diff on my 2003 TD4 Auto using ref number KHC500070 and they have a drop down price list of this Bush with C8. Z8. M8.L8 following the above ref number. Anyone know what these numbers signify?

cheers

I have a quite alarming metallic clunk, which is from the front of the car, if I move off backwards anything other than very slowly. I'm pretty sure it does not happen when moving off forwards.

Haven't got under and looked at it yet (garage to full of rubbish to get car over inspection pit!) so any advice on what to look for is appreciated.

Will be clearing the garage this week as a mate wants to use the pit, so will get to it over the next few days. I'm wondering if its drop links, ARB bushes or an exhaust mount, hoping its nothing more serious. Car is still vibrating badly since changing engine mounts, not sure if that could have worn anything.

I'd start looking at the link from the engine to the vehicle (an't remember where it fits exactly) but there is a dog bone shaped link with 2 bushes - I think Hippo posted on how his looked fine but when he took it off the rubber fell out !
Also - don't replace these or the engine mounts with poly - I did and it vibrates like hell - changed them back. Poly seems o.k for suspension but too harsh for engine and transmission. Have used them successfully for the diff mounts - see posts above.

Mudinuri - the clue is in the make and the price - all will fit - you pays your money, takes your choice and sometimes gets ripped off !!!!!

Hi Andyfreelandy
Have just recieved an email from L R Direct. The C8 is Britpart. Z8 Allmakes. M8 Bearmach. L8 Landrover. Will probably buy L8 or M8. Have just finished talking to Warren at Muddy Mods re changing the front of my 2003 TD4 to the upgraded front and he tells me it"s just the Bumper and the LIghts which are different plus a little bit of cutting and making two brackets, so now on the look out for the above bumper and lights.

Thanks for comments, I replaced the main RH engine mount and the lower tie bar - which is when the vibration started. I used Bearmach parts, not poly. I'm thinking the vibration is because the new mount is to soft - it was a lot softer than the one that came off - I'm not sure why it failed the WOF really - it looked fine.

Have you thought about putting the old tie bar bush back in? The engine shouldn't vibrate the body as it's suspended in soft rubber.

Don't try to loosen the nuts, go straight to the bolts as the nuts are captive/welded in.
I bought three poly bushes for mine and replaced them all at the same time. The rear mounts can wear too, especially if your VCU is over tight.

I got bad vibration on my old freelander and it was the prop support bearings Grumpy
Its definitely the injin. The vibrations only started when I changed the mounts and its a lot lot worse when the injin is cold. Once its completely and thoroughly up to temp the vibrations are not so bad - but they are still there... things still rattle, peddles buzz and the rear view mirror is blurred!

Something's not right there. The engine is supposed to be rubber suspended, so the vibration you describe can't happen. Best get it over your pit and look for engine to body contact.

o.k - well clean the rear view mirror - that's the easy one sorted :)
Seriously - I didn't know how much vibration there was on a TD4 until I uncovered my almost imperceptible looseness of the alternator - see my other thread. Marginal looseness and so much noise ! Must have been like that for ages - quietest ever now and a delight to drive.
In the past I have packed engines / bushes, mounts etc with corrugated card in order to eliminate them. Sounds like a duff support link though. I had a similar situation on a Ford - (wash my mouth out) - the suspension arms had 'soft' rubber and the axle bumped when going over rough ground. Eventually I had an assistant lie in the gutter whilst I reversed into the kerb and they saw the axle movement !

w

what do you think of them compared to original parts alibro ?
I've never bought OEM ones so don't have new ones to compare them with but the poly bushes did the job fine. No vibration or extra noise that I could notice. I heard somewhere that they might not last long but I'm not sure I believe that. It could be from someone who had a dodgy VCU and/or the rears were duff and maybe only changed the front mount. In my experience your best changing all three at the same time as the front won't last long if the rears are dodgy.
