Front axle fault

a Friend of mine came to me today with his disco saying that it would only drive in diff lock. after investigation i discovered that there was a fault with the front axle. you can turn the front prop by hand, so i jacked up the front end and turned the wheels to try and narrow down the fault, to no success. how can i tell weather it is a half shaft/UJ (which one) or if it is the diff. or do i just go gun hoe and strip the front axle down.

by turning the wheels can you hear any clonking etc.
If it turns out to be the diff then you will need to remove the CV's and half shafts any way.

was the difflock engaged when you tried to turn the wheels by hand?

Got it sorted it was naked CV joint caused by a leakey swivel.
