does the front axle oil filler, fill the outside parts as circled in red on the image attached? thx

Theoretically, no. There's a seal at the joint where the swivel ball attached that seals on a collar on the half shaft.


This prevents the swivel filling up when traversing side slopes.

Often removed or ignored. Which is fine if you don't go on side slopes.

so I would need to add some diff oil to those separately them? there appear to be a bolt that unscrews to fill. Next question would be to what level?

There will be filler/level plugs on the swivel housings. You can fill with 90 weight oil, or use the one shot grease, or a mixture of both.

The plugs are like small square bolt heads. You can usually remove them with a small adjustable, but if they have been in there for years, get the proper square key.

Fill to the level plug with the oil. Or use one sachet of one shot grease per housing. If you can get it all in, the sachets are actually made for Defenders, which I think have bigger housings. If you can't get it all in, fill to the level plugs.

On the level you put as much oil as needed until you reach the plug hole.
A bit of the oil also makes its way into the hub for the bearings so important to keep them toped up.
If proper swivel hub grease is used its fine as it gets quite thin when warm. Thick grease is a no.

I always use the level plugs myself, always have.

Only thing is, you need to be on a fairly level surface for the plugs to work well.

I'm going to use gear oil as that's what they recommend. Thanks all.

EP90 to the filler level. EP oil has sulphur, which is the key to reducing wear in this design.

Do you have free wheel hubs?

Yes go for GL4 too rather than GL5 as that does not agree with the phosphor bronze bits in gearbox
