Ok, we have a Defender 110, 1997 which came with 2 lovely spot lights on the front A bar ....... problem is, they aren't actually wired up to anything and we'd quite like them to be !

We have had 2 quotes from people to fit them, one being £40 and the other who said £70 but then sucked through his teeth when he realised it was a defender !!! The £70 man mentioned that if it wasn't wired properly then they would blow every year, which has now concerned us that it could be how the £40 bloke was planning on doing them. Would a separate switch on the dash be better ?

- How simple are they to wire ourselves and where would we start ? (Not my preference !)
- Is anyone local to Manchester who would be capable of doing it for a reasonable price .... properly ;-) ...... pretty pretty please ! (I would provide cakes etc !)

P.S: Relays etc mean absolutely nothing to me, electrics certainly are NOT my 'thing', so any instructions need to be aimed at a 5yr old level ....... sorry !

Are you absolutely certain there's no wiring for them' . Have a look behind the headlamps, possibly in the wing area for a small 'box' with some wiring going in/coming out of it. Or were the lamps on purely for cosmetics!?

There is def wiring coming from them but will have a look in daylight for the 'box' ....... hoping this is going to be simple enough for me to do (ie just plug something in !!) will try to take a couple of pics too ...... thanks so far ! x

it's very simple. 70quid guy is taking the mick.

switch, relay, fuse and some wire depending on how you want them to work.

i'd be surprised if it took them more than 30 mins.

Trax, thanks, much as we thought ...... but could you possibly explain the "switch, relay, fuse and some wire" in a bit more detail as I wouldn't even have a clue what wire to get !!!! SORRY !!!!!!
Think I'd like them to just work when we put full beam on ? Can't think of why we would want them on at any ither point but not want the full beam on ?
Thanks v much x

(Copied from Internet, not mine!)
The relay is the little 'box' you need to look for, otherwise it really is quite simple. The squiggly line from the battery feed represents a fuse ( rating of which will vary depending on power of lamps ). Feed from main beam is just a case of splicing the 12v feed to the main beam lamps and tapping in to it.
It is an easy job to do, but if you're not confident whatsoever then get someone to help!
( I still think you'll find the relay box hiding!).

just buy the boltonbits wiring harness, it simply fits inline with the h4 bulb connector and comes all wired up. You simply follow the dead easy instructions.

I think they are about £23 delivered and you wont need to do any messing about with wires

guess it comes on with high/main beam?

sounds ideal for the op

they could have done the connections a bit better. heatshrink the ends.

Parts ordered, 'bullet' bitten !! ........ if you hear a loud bang from the Stockport direction, you'll know what it is !! Thanks again, and please be prepared for further stupid questions ;)

Job done ! Many huge thanks to you lot for advising on the wiring loom to use and giving us the confidence to try it ourselves. We actually timed how long it took us, and after 1 hour 17 mins we had fully working front spots all neatly fitted and wired up ...... this even including me being a complete dope and undoing far too many screws to remove the headlamp and then not being sure which screw went where ..... yes, I know !!!
All in all, very happy with the result and the fact that it only cost us £22 instead of the teeth-sucking more than £70 we'd been quoted ;-)

Thanks v much x
