Hi guys/gals...Ok, firstly I own an 03 1.8 petrol freelander... (and a 110)... :D .
Major problems with the freelander I need either a genius (one of you guys) or a box of matches and right now I'm tempted by the latter. Car keeps either refusing to start or cutting out. It's recently had a new head gasket, complete exhaust, all brakes etc as well as most other expensive things associated with this piece of ............... I've checked all electrics... fuses etc, engine is sparking ok, injectors have fuel to them etc...could it be that the fuel pump is knackered...if so any ideas how much this will cost me??
P.s. It will be for sale once fixed and after all the money we have spent on it a car that will live forever for someone else. It just needs to go... and never return...please help!!

First stop would be to plug the computer into the ECU and readout the fault codes. Could be a sensor or a problem with the wireloom. Connectors are always the weak point in electric systems. Might be worth going round all connectors on engine related components and checking, possibly reseating them. For the engine to completely cut out I would suspect the crank position sensor as this is needed to fire the injectors and the plugs. Good luck and don't be too hard on your poor Hippo.

Hmm if its sparking, then that tends to mean that the crank sensor is OK..

Definitely worth hooking up an ECU fault code thingie..thats generally cheap and may show up something..

Is there a pattern to failure to start.. will it start when hot, but not cold, or vice versa?

Will it start when throttle is floored?..any pattern there points to a fuel related sensor, not total injector failure. When it cuts does it misfire first, or just die? Does it die when idling, or running flat out?
