Used 1.8xei last night no problems. Went to start it this evening,
intermittently getting a loud ticking from around the fuse box. Alarm on/off
a few times, same thing. Alarm on/off a few times more, loud
dang-dang-dang-dang from the engine compartment - starter motor failing?
Rocked car back & forth in gear & tried again, more engine compartment
noises interminantly mixed with the engine slowly turning over once or twice
before stopping. I'm now getting nothing other than the dash lights dimming
when turning the ignition key, think the battery is out of charge. Any
ideas?

TIA, Angus

Charge the battery?

If that doesn't fix it, then your battery could have gone open
circuit, I've had that happen twice to me in the space of a year, once
on an old battery, and the second time on the new battery bought from
the RAC chap who came out to rescue me the first time. All this was
on an old Audi, but a battery is a battery. RAC man reckons it wasn't
the car that was doing it, just bad luck.

Yep its the battery - charging it is unlikly to work - modern batteries
give there all until the last second - then nothing.
