freelander won`t start 1.8 k series engine help

hi folks i`m new here so be gentle with me lol

i have just purchased a v reg 1999 freelander of ebay the chap who i brought it of said that the head gasket had gone but upon inspection
i.e no oily substance in expansion tank no creamy colouring on dip stick
and my brother drove it back for me 40 miles with no problems.

we had to jump start it to get it going but since i parked it up it will not start i have changed plugs, replaced battery but to no evail.
it will not start just kicks over attempts to fire but just car`nt seem to get there...
has anyone got any suggestions thnx:confused:
 
sorry but burn it,failing that if your close and supply tea and chocolate hob nobs I'll come take a look

i can look at it myself i was just merely asking if someone had any idea what the problem could be to save me looking at every possibility.
i.e ht leads starter moter e.t.c

i think i`ll keep the tea and hopb nobs for me self lol:)

If the problem is not related to the cylinderhead? as I've no experiance with K-series cylinderhead gasket problem and i don't know for sure if that would affect it (I would hazard a guess it might!). Its probably damp getting into the distributor cap. Replace the dis-cap/dissy arm and leads, mines did the same thing a few months back and has been fine after I replaced the distributor cap.
