Right I have found out that the whirling noise my 1999 Freelander XDI was making is the IRD Unit.
The mechanic said that there was metal filings in the oil and that the noise was coming from there when he run it with the wheels of the ground on a ramp.

This Bloody car has cost me a fortune this winter and now this!!
I cant afford to get rid as I have spent over £2k in a year on this car....

Does anyone know where I can get a cheap recon/repair from?

The idea is that the ratio from front to rear was incorrect in the early IRD units and caused the premature failure of the VCU

Therefore when ordering an exchange unit for the model of your choice, it will have the corrected ratio that LandRover fitted in the later IRDs

edit to add:-

The VCU remains the same - but best replaced as well in case this is what took the IRD out in the first place
