this may help some of you with unexplainable water loss.
been loosing water for several days, eratic idling too .
finally traced it to the inlet manifold gasket .
replaced the gasket an hrs work, leak sorted:) .
hope it helps anyone else

Interesting. Mine is leaking water, i have to top it up every couple of days. I was told by the garage that they traced it to the head gasket and I'd need a new head gasket. In a blind panic my husband got another mechanic to have a quick look. He looked in the water bottle and said as it was clean and didn't have any gunk or oil in the water it may not be the head gasket. Who knows?! I'll have to pay a fortune for someone to check it and then tell me it will cost £1000 for a new head gasket.

There are two types of hgf:

Mayo - Emulsified oil and water usually in the coolant and/or in the oil

Low Fat hgf - No mayo, external leak to the periphery of the block, usually some steam present.

If Mayo present, get a block pressure test done, this tests each cylinder.

If no mayo, check the pressure of the coolant system, should be 0.9 -1.2bar on the 1.8 petrol system.
